Everything you need to know about going Cruelty-free/// Why I went Cruelty-free.

Hello all, I hope everyone is doing well. Today’s post is going to be on why I decided to go cruelty-free in my beauty routine. This has been a post I’ve been wanting to do for quite some time, in regards to explain why I am now cruelty-free and refuse to use beauty products tested on animals.

I started my cruelty-free journey back in late 2016, I started to become more aware of which brands were marked as cruelty-free, I began checking the ingredients of products, and researching into brands that did not have any sign of being cruelty-free. Thankfully, there are a good amount of beauty brands that are dedicated to being cruelty-free, however through my research I had also found that many brands I would have thought would be cruelty-free were not. Also I came to the realization that there are still many brands that test on animals.

Not going to lie, for some of my favorite products that were from brands that tested on animals, it was difficult finding a replacement, however I was dedicated to doing my research and finding a better product that was 100% cruelty-free even if it took some time.

I am strongly passionate and committed to being cruelty-free, making the switch is not very difficult, and I hope more people can come to the realization of the harm committed on these innocent animals when you support brands that test on animals. As a disclaimer, in no way am I trying to persuade people to stop buying from these brands, I just wanted to share my reasons as to why I choose to switch to only cruelty-free products.

Reasons why I decided to go Cruelty-free:

  1. No animal should have cosmetics or any type of product tested on them.
  2. It makes me suspicious as to what are companies hiding in their products, that they feel the need to test them on animals first, and then humans. (Are there chemicals in these products, that may react differently on an animal than human?)
  3. Typically CF brands are more dedicated to more natural, eco-friendly, organic, or sometimes even vegan products.
  4. CF brands often use cleaner ingredients, in regards to unknown chemicals.
  5. Support ethical beauty brands.
  6. These laboratory animals, are innocent creatures that deserve better.
  7. Animal testing is cruel and inhumane.
  8. There is no need to test products on animals, it’s unnecessary and there are alternative ways.
  9. Going CF is better for the environment.
  10. In the long run it is ethically, morally, and healthier to make the switch to a cruelty-free lifestyle.

How do you know is a product is cruelty-free?

Typically when a product is CF it will be certified through one of the organizations of PETA’s Beauty without Bunnies, Cruelty-free International’s Leaping Bunny, or Choose Cruelty Free (CCF). Each of these organizations has a CF bunny logo, however since not every company can afford this licensing fee, some brands may not have their products labeled. Even if brands, claim their products are cruelty-free, we cannot assume that they are unless they are certified by one of these organizations.

Since starting this journey, I can now say that my beauty routine is fully cruelty-free, from my makeup, to my shower staples, and even toothpaste. I have incorporated this CF switch to other aspects of my life such as cleaning products. I hope that this year I can start to only use solely based CF products in all areas of my life from personal hygiene, to laundry detergent, and other household products.

My First Semester in College

Hello everyone, I am back with a new blog post as promised. For today’s post, I will be talking about a general overview of my experience during my first semester in college. A huge part of why I was not blogging for months, was because I had started college and I was adjusting to the college life. However going forward when I start the spring semester, I am planning on continuing with my blog, by posting once weekly.

I will not be enclosing what school I go to as of now, for safety reasons, however I am from the Chicagoland area and I do attend school not very far from my house, at a Liberal Arts College. I did choose to dorm on campus, to really engage myself in the college experience and to practice independence.

The day I moved into my dorm was such a blur, I remember feeling heighten emotions of anxiousness, surprise, and excitement. From where I was the first half of 2018, going and starting college was a massive change from everything I had been used to. The main feeling I felt, was that this was unbelievable, I am no longer living at home, I’m away from my family, and I am starting this new chapter of my life alone at college. Orientation was great though, I participated in this pre-orientation program, before my school’s main orientation, and it helped me meet new people and feel more comfortable in the environment before transitioning to a larger group setting.

The biggest adjustment at college was definitely living in the dorms. I live in a quad, so I have three other roommates, and living with strangers is difficult, you have to open up, and thankfully we all did and become close later on. The cafeteria food is alright, although after two weeks, I got real sick of the food and just wanted a home cooked meal. The most difficult aspect of living in a dorm, was the whole bathroom situation, my dorm building has communal bathrooms and man was that an adjustment, for others it’s not too bad, but something I miss is the luxury of my bathroom at home and the privacy I had, although it is part of the college experience.

As far as classes go, they are way better than in high school without a doubt. I took an english composition course, my freshman year seminar which was about gender and college experience, and an intro to psychology course. I was also enrolled in a math class, however I ended up dropping that class (a story for another time). My classes were very good for the most part, I had the best professors and I was so thankful to have made friends in each of my classes. It’s very nice having a different schedule every day, having time in between classes to relax and go back to your dorm or to chill in the main lounge and get some work done.

Overall, college has opened me up to so much more, I have met many cool people,  I have gotten out of my comfort zone, took risks, and have gotten involved in campus life. There has been some struggles throughout the semester, where I had wanted to move back home or felt alone, but I pushed through it, like most students. I appreciate the pretty great moments I had with friends, the laughs that I had not felt in years, and the one-time opportunities I partaken in.

17 Things I learned at 17

Hello everyone, it’s been awhile since my last post, I went on vacation last week and I’ve also been getting ready for college, I finally move in this weekend. It seems like everything is happening so fast, I’m excited but also nervous. Anyways, today is my 18th birthday and I decided to do a post that would make me reflect on my year of being seventeen. Most of these are very personal and I decided to write this for me in my journal, however I thought it would be nice to share with you all, everything I learned this past year.

I learned that/to….. 

  1. My mental health comes first. I think that during my senior year is when I finally realized that my mental health is valid. I had such a difficult year mentally and I realized that my mental health is just as important as my physical health.
  2. If I have the opportunity to fix something, then I should do it as soon as possible. I learned this the hard way, but there were so many times when I could change something, but all I did was fear “what if’s” my mind and wasted time.
  3. Challenge my avoidance. My anxiety has been the worse it’s ever been this past year, from the start of senior year until as recently as a few weeks ago. There were so many, many events that I unfortunately avoided, because I was so afraid and because of that, I will never have memories of those events in my life.
  4. To deal through uncomfortable situations. Of course no one wants to feel uncomfortable, however the feeling is impossible to flee. I had lots of practice, sitting with those uncomfortable feelings, giving myself that exposure. I’ve also learned ways to cope with it and make it better.
  5. Take chances on first-time opportunities. On a more positive note, there were few very memorable occasions I took apart of. My fear almost got the best of me, but I took those chances and did not regret one of them.
  6. Get out of the house and do something for yourself. During the winter months, I felt so alone and isolated, I stayed home pretty much everyday secluded from everything, except my appointments. Maybe what I really needed was just some time outside of the house even if I was just solo.
  7. The library is a sacred and underrated place. This ones a little different, but this was the one place I always felt safe whether it be at school or my public library. During the school year, whenever I didn’t have classes, I would go to the library and sit in the back, next to window and daze off sometimes, looking into the gloomy sky. I felt okay there, and sometimes if you just need sometime to be by yourself, the library is the right spot, to tune everything out.
  8. Gratitude practices make a difference. This year I was challenged with practicing gratitude by my therapist. At first I thought to myself, “this is useless”, however it was far from the truth. The more I began to practice this skill, the more I realized how much more appreciative it made me of everything. (I highly recommend everyone trying some different gratitude practices).
  9. It’s okay to just sit and cry. I accepted that sometimes crying is needed, everything feels better once you cry. Crying is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength.
  10. Living outside of your comfort zone is probably one of the best things. I unfortunately probably was in a cave most of the time (metaphorically speaking), but those very limited times when I got out of my shell, were the absolute best. Hopefully that’s a goal that I stride for more when I’m 18.
  11. Challenging yourself is a great way for you to grow as a person. Any challenge that you give to yourself, will shape you into the person you are looking to become. Set the bar up high and challenge yourself.
  12. If people are there for you, then open up to them. There were a few people in my life, that were there for me when I needed them, and I just couldn’t express what I was feeling or going through, but if I could go back and change that I most definitely would.
  13. Write, Write, & Write. Release your endless emotions: write them down, journal, blog, or just type them in your phone. Creating my blog was one of the best things I’ve ever done and it gave me this outlet to express everything I am passionate about and to have the freedom to write about anything on my mind.
  14. If you feel that your struggling mentally, seek a therapist or talk to a counselor/social worker. I finally started seeing a therapist a little bit after I turned 17. As well as, last year at school, I finally reached out to my school social worker, and I realized that it’s okay to just go and see them. Sometimes you need a break from your class and need to talk to someone who understands what you may be feeling. Thankfully I had an amazing guidance counselor and social worker at my school, that I was able to see throughout the day.
  15. My mom is always there for me. Yes, my mom was probably always there for me, but this last year was unlike any other year. After all that I went through, I had to say that everything impacted her in various ways. Most of all, she helped me finish school when I lost motivation and continued to help me with any of my needs.
  16. Sometimes it’s the most simplest things that feed the soul. It may be just hearing the waves clash on the shore, or that bite into your favorite meal, or maybe feeling the warmth of the sun against your skin. Be mindful during these sensations and remember them.
  17. I’m still finding who I am and want to become. I saved this one for last because this is something I constantly think about. I’m often confused about life, and although life is a journey about self-discovery, I know that through time I will find myself and know who I am.
